Jerry Jones Says the Cowboys Can Be a Run-First Team, and the Ground Game Backs Him Up
Cowboys fans, when was the last time you watched this offense just line up and run people over? Monday night was that game.
Our Take: Jerry Jones is right to lean into the run. A Cowboys team that can run the ball gets Dak Prescott easier throws and keeps a shaky defense off the field.
Here's what we know. DallasCowboys.com reports Dallas ran for 204 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries in the road win, after entering Week 7 ranked 31st in rushing. Blogging The Boys notes Javonte Williams had the first 150-yard rushing game by a Cowboys back since 2016, and Dallas is now 3-4 and second in the NFC East.
Jones told 105.3 The Fan, per DallasCowboys.com: "That lets us have the opportunity to get Dak under center a lot more, and that's a big key too." He was blunt about the other side, too, saying "the defense is really not where we expected it to be, but we can win" with the offense.
On the trade deadline two weeks away, Jones said: "It's unlikely we'll get the opportunity from outside coming in. But if it's there, I'll do it." That's not a promise of a move, and we're not treating it like one.
What to watch: whether Brian Schottenheimer keeps the carries coming this week, and whether the front office finds defensive help before the deadline.
