Jerry Jones Says a Troy Aikman Role Is 'Very Possible,' and Cowboys Fans Should Want It

By , Cowboys of Dallas ·

Cowboys Nation, this one hits home. The greatest quarterback in franchise history, in some role with the front office? Jerry Jones isn't ruling it out.

Our Take: Nothing is happening yet, and nobody should pretend otherwise. But if Jerry is serious, bringing in a three-time Super Bowl winner with a clear-eyed view of what winning football looks like would be a smart move for a team that badly needs a new voice.

According to CBS Sports, Jones told 105.3 The Fan: "The answer is not that necessarily we're going to do something more direct with the team at this time, but don't rule it out... It's very possible." CBS's Jared Dubin notes Aikman is ESPN's lead Monday Night Football analyst and also works as a consultant for the Dolphins, and that Dallas sits at 3-4.

Aikman then pumped the brakes himself. NBC Sports' Mike Florio reports Aikman said on 96.7 The Ticket, "I think it's really unfair to Jerry that he then has to answer these questions." Aikman said he and Jones "briefly touched on it," that Jones was very complimentary, and that they are not having those conversations at this time. Florio adds that Aikman puts his chances of staying in TV next year at 50-50.

What to watch: whether this talk turns into anything real once the season ends. For now it's an open door, not a hire, so keep the focus on getting this team back above .500.
