Dallas Cowboys final: DAL 13, GB 23

By , Cowboys of Dallas · · Updated

Green Bay 23, Dallas 13. The Cowboys spotted the Packers a 17-0 halftime lead at Lambeau Field on Sunday night and never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Dallas is 2-4 and has now lost two straight.

How it got away: Green Bay opened with a 14-play, 90-yard march, converting four third downs along the way, the last one on Jordan Love's 9-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden. Dallas had a chance to answer right away when Dee Winters intercepted Love late in the first quarter, but the drive that followed ended with Evan Williams picking off Dak Prescott at the Green Bay 3. The Packers turned that into a 15-play drive and a 25-yard Trey Smack field goal. Then rookie Brandon Cisse jumped a throw for CeeDee Lamb with two minutes left in the half (Lamb lost his footing on the play), and Love capped a quick 77-yard drive himself on a 1-yard keeper with 23 seconds to go.

Javonte Williams got Dallas on the board with a 1-yard run midway through the third quarter, but Smack answered with field goals from 44 and 29 yards. Prescott found Ryan Flournoy for a 6-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left, and the two-point try for Lamb fell incomplete.

What beat them: third downs and mistakes. A Dallas defense that came in as the league's worst on third down let Green Bay convert 11 of 18, including nine of its first 10. The Cowboys were flagged 11 times for 108 yards, went 2 for 4 on fourth down, and had two second-half drives die on downs, one of them inside the Green Bay 15. The run game never showed up either: 48 yards on 15 carries.

Cowboys standouts: Caleb Downs was everywhere with a game-high 12 tackles. The pass rush got home three times, one sack apiece for Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark and Elijah Garcia, and the run defense held the Packers to 57 yards on 26 carries. Winters' first-quarter interception looked like a pick-six until replay ruled him down. On offense, George Pickens caught six passes for 73 yards, Lamb had nine catches for 70 yards on 18 targets, and Flournoy caught seven for 40 and the late score. Tyler Goodson averaged 24.4 yards on five kick returns.

The numbers: Prescott finished 34 of 54 for 258 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and NBC counted seven hits on him. Love went 23 of 41 for 276 yards with a touchdown passing, a touchdown running and an interception. Golden had six catches for 104 yards. Green Bay outgained Dallas 318 to 303.

Injuries: KaVontae Turpin was hurt on the opening kickoff, and ESPN's game page lists him out with a rib injury. Winters was hurt in the second quarter and is listed with an ankle injury. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and tackle Drew Shelton (both hamstring) were inactive.

What's next: another road game. Dallas visits the Philadelphia Eagles, also 2-4, on Monday Night Football, Oct. 26 at 6:15 p.m. MT.

Our take: the defense did enough to win against the run, but you can't hand a good quarterback two short fields and a pile of third-down conversions on the road. At 2-4, Monday night in Philly is close to a must-have.
